Dialers: Open Transport PPP
Apple is currently shipping this dialer with all of its current computers running 7.6-OS8.
Advantages of this: it will definately work with Open Transport, and it is faster on PowerPC machines.
Disadvantages of this: it is next to impossible to control the way the modem talks to Teleport, in case of flow control difficulties. Changing flow control involves editing a 'text' document with special tools (BBedit, etc.) to change the string and/or port speed. The 'text' documents are in the System Folder, under Extensions, under Modem Scripts.
Also, there is a gadget that will generate modem scripts, which can be gotten from Apple.
Setting Up OTPPP
To configure OT PPP, just open the PPP control panel:
- Make sure you have the username, password, and Teleport's modem number entered in.
- Next, click on the Options... button.

- In this window, the first settings you can change are the redialing settings. Here (as pictured above) you can set up OTPPP to redial alternate numbers, the same number or not at all.
- Next, click on the connection tab.

In this section, you can set various connection properties for the profile. The first option, Connect Automatically when starting TCP/IP applications, will cause OTPPP to dial whenever a user launches Netscape, Eudora, Fetch or any other TCP/IP application. Use Verbose Logging will keep very detailed logs of attempted and successful connections (as opposed to basic logs). The other settings are pretty self explanatory and a matter of personal preference. Next, click on the Protocol tab.

Under this section, most settings are fairly self-explanatory. You'll want the first two options, Allow Error Correction and Compression and Use TCP Header Compression to be enabled. Make sure that Connect to a Command Line Host is NOT selected. This dials into a Unix prompt and requires the user to manually log in each time, or to specify a connect script. It is NOT worth the trouble.
Next, click on the OK button, close OTPPP and save changes.
Then open up the Modem Control Panel and look for your modem out of the choices presented:

- In this spot, all you need to do is select the proper port, select a modem profile that matches your modem as close as possible and set up the remaining modem settings.
- Now, once you close the modem control panel and save changes, you are ready to dial Teleport!
- To disable OT PPP so that you can use another dialler like FreePPP, see the list of important files listed below.
Important Files you must disable in order to use other diallers
In the Extensions folder:
- OpenTpt Remote Access
- OpenTpt Modem
- OpenTpt Serial Arbitrator
In the Extensions folder under Scripting Additions:
In the Control Panels folder:
Don't just drag this stuff to the Trash. Open Transport is system software, and if you trash it, you'll have to reinstall it from system disks with the help of Apple tech support. Instead, make a New Folder on your desktop, or somewhere where you store important stuff, and drag all those files to that new folder. Call it something memorable, like "OTPPP Stuff."
