Programs: Netscape Mail

Netscape Navigator includes an email program. Please note that you may already have an email program such as Eudora. If so, you do not need to use Netscape Navigator mail. Which email program you use is your choice.

To open Netscape Navigator's mail client choose Netscape Mail from the Window menu. Netscape Navigator will open its mail client in a separate window. You can switch between the browser window and the mail window using the Taskbar or the Alt-Tab key combination.

The Netscape Mail window is divided into three "window panes." The top left pane shows a list of mail folders (or mailboxes), including your Inbox. The top right pane shows a list of messages in the selected mailbox. The bottom pane shows the contents of the selected message. You can change the sizes of these panes by clicking and dragging on their borders.

IMPORTANT: When you open Netscape Mail, Netscape Navigator may prompt you for "Password for POP3 User". Make sure you type your password.

NOTE:If you registered for an account after May 8, 1997, you only have one password. Enter this password at the prompt. If you registered for an account before this date, we assigned you two passwords. If you have two passwords, then you need to enter the lowercase unix password at the prompt.

READING MAIL

  1. Choose Get New Mail from the File menu.

IMPORTANT: When you open Netscape Mail, Netscape Navigator may prompt you for "Password for POP3 User". Make sure you type your password in lower case. IMPORTANT NOTE!

Netscape Mail connects to AEBC's mail server and downloads any messages waiting in your mailspool.

  2. Click on the Inbox.

Messages in the Inbox appear in the message list window pane (the left window pane).

  3. Click on the message you want to read.

The contents of the message appear in the bottom, message pane. If you cannot see the bottom message pane, resize the Netscape mail window. Drag the bottom border of the mail window down until you can see the message.

SENDING MAIL
There are two ways to compose a message. You can compose a new message, or you can send a message in response to a message you received.

SENDING A NEW MESSAGE

  1. Choose New Mail Message from the File menu.
    The Message Composition window appears.

  2. Type the email address of the recipient in the "Mail To" field.

  3. To mail copies of the message to other people, type the email address(es) in the "CC" field.

Note: To email to more than one person, use commas to separate the addresses. For example: "docs@aebc.com, test@aebc.com".

  4. Type a short but descriptive line for the "Subject" field.

  5. For instructions on attaching documents, please see Netscape Navigator's online handbook for directions.

  6. Type your message.

  7. To send the message immediately:

    a) Choose Immediate Delivery from the Options menu.
    b) Choose Send Now from the File menu.

    Netscape Navigator sends the message.

    To send the message later:
    a) Choose Deferred Delivery from the Options menu.
    b) Choose Send Later from the File menu to queue the message.

The message is moved to your Outbox.

    c) When you are ready to send your queued messages choose Send Mail in Outbox from the File menu.

Netscape Navigator sends all messages in your Outbox and saves a copy of the sent messages in your Sent folder.

REPLYING TO A MESSAGE
  1. Open the message you want to reply to.

  2. Choose Reply from the Message menu.

  3. Make sure the "Mail to" field contains the correct information.

  4. In the message field, respond to the original message.

Note: Original text is marked with the ">" at the beginning of each line. You should delete any parts of the original message that are not necessary to your reply. This saves bandwidth, and gives the recipient(s) less text to read.

DELETING A MESSAGE
  1. Select the message to delete.

  2. Choose Delete Message from the Edit menu.

Note: You can also select the message and hit your delete key on your keyboard.

When you delete a message it is not deleted immediately. Instead it is moved to the Trash folder. This way if you accidentally delete a message it will still be available for you.

The messages in the Trash folder stay there, taking up space on your hard drive, until you delete them from the Trash folder.

To permanently delete the messages in your Trash folder:

  3. Choose Empty Trash Folder from the File menu.
